Portrait painted from a photo taken during a photo shoot. The young woman had fun during the photo shoot, and this relaxed expression was a compliment. So I had to paint it!

While walking through Arniston/Waenhuiskrans I saw this small, unassuming house. Sitting brightly in the afternoon sun, this little door was the entrance to a hidden family's life.

Arches leading somewhere. I loved the repeating nature of the arches and openings. The subtle play of light and shadows was fun to sketch.

The ink makes this street scene moody and expressive.expresive

my story
Monochrome art has a honesty to it that fascinates me.
Working as an astronomer, scientist and software engineer was as far away from art as can be.
My first real attempt at sketching was around 2008. I did the pencil and charcoal thing in 2009, and attempt oil painting, hated the drying time, and tried acrylic paint. I soon realized that I I tend to paint in monochrome, and continued with charcoal and graphite.
Life happened and in 2017 I fell in love with fountain pen sketches.
After discovering Chinese ink sticks, I gravitated towards ink paintings, portraits and lean towards the dramatic and moody.
If you love what you see, consider a commission and share my love for monochromatic art.
